What is the format of the digital SAT?
Updated November 3, 2026 · facts checked against College Board and ACT sources listed below
Short answer
The digital SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes), for 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes plus a 10-minute break. Each section is split into two equal modules, and the second module adapts to how you did on the first. It is taken in College Board's Bluebook app and scored from 400 to 1600.
Sections and timing
- Reading and Writing: two modules of 27 questions, 32 minutes each (54 questions, 64 minutes).
- Math: two modules of 22 questions, 35 minutes each (44 questions, 70 minutes).
- A 10-minute break between the two sections.
- Total testing time: 2 hours 14 minutes.
What the questions look like
- Reading and Writing: each question has its own short passage (about 25 to 150 words). Questions cover craft and structure, information and ideas, standard English conventions, and expression of ideas.
- Math: about three quarters multiple choice and about one quarter student-produced responses, where you type the answer. Domains are algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry.
- A Desmos graphing calculator is built into the app for every Math question, and a reference sheet is available. You may also bring an approved calculator.
- A small number of questions in each module are unscored pretest questions. You can't tell which ones, so treat every question as if it counts.
How it is scored
Each section is scored from 200 to 800 and the total is their sum, 400 to 1600. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question.
Because the test is adaptive, the questions you get in the second module depend on the first: doing well in module 1 routes you to a harder module 2, which is where the highest scores are possible.
